Prof J.W. Elsner Competition

The Competition is organized under the auspices of PTMTS (Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) and the Polish Pilot Centre of ERCOFTAC. The Competition is aimed at promoting of research achievements of young outstanding scientists  working in the field of fluid mechanics.

Rules of the Prof. Janusz W. Elsner Competition or the best scientific work in fluid mechanics are available in pdf here.

Rules of Competition

Candidates, up to 35 years of age, may be M.Sc. or recent Ph.D. graduates who have defended their Ph.D. thesis not earlier than 2 years before the date of the paper submission. The competitors should present individual or joint papers with a supervisor or co–supervisor (no more than three co-authors), containing original experimental, numerical, or analytical results. The Competition is held during the Fluid Mechanics Conference, organized under the auspices of the Fluid Mechanics Section of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS). Entry for the Competition requires the submission of an abstract prepared according to the template provided by Fluid Mechanics Conference organizers and the declaration of entry into the Competition.

The Competition winners will be awarded with diplomas and prizes. The sponsors and prizes of the Competition are:

  • 1st prize – funded by Organisers of the Fluid Mechanics Conference,
  • 2nd prize – funded by the Polish Pilot Centre of ERCOFTAC,
  • 3rd prize – funded by the Częstochowa Branch of the Polish Society for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.

The prize pool is determined and announced each time the conference is held.

Competition Organizing Committee

The Competition Organizing Committee is composed of:

  • Competition Organizing Committee Chairman
  • Chairman of the Fluid Mechanics Section of the Committee on Mechanics of the PAS or the person appointed by the Chairman,
  • Chairman of the Polish Pilot Centre of ERCOFTAC or the person appointed by the Chairman,
  • Chairman of the Częstochowa Branch of the Polish Society for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics or the person appointed by the Chairman,
  • Chairman of the Organizing Committee of Fluid Mechanics Conference or the person appointed by the Chairman,

The Competition Organizing Committee Chairman is appointed by the Chairman of the Fluid Mechanics Section of the Committee on Mechanics of the PAS.

Procedures

The two-stage selection procedure is applied. The first stage selection is performed by the Competition Organizing Committee. If the number of submissions is large enough to justify the extension of the Competition Organizing Committee, then members of the Scientific Committee of the Fluid Mechanics Conference as well as members of the Fluid Mechanics Section of the Committee on Mechanics of the PAS may also be invited for the first stage of evaluation.

The selection procedure in the first stage, in which the 5 papers with top scores are nominated for the second stage of Competition, is based on abstracts. The number of entries qualified for the second stage may be changed by the Committee in agreement with the Organizing Committee of the Fluid Mechanics Conference.

Papers qualified for the second stage of selection must be presented during the special plenary Competition Session organized during the Fluid Mechanics Conference. The contents and quality of the presentation are evaluated by the Competition Jury.

The Competition Jury consists of members of the Competition Organizing Committee and is supplemented by members of the Scientific Committee of the Fluid Mechanics Conference, members of the Fluid Mechanics Section of the Committee on Mechanics of the PAS, and foreign speakers invited by organizers of the Fluid Mechanics Conference attending the conference. Members of the Jury are appointed by Competition Organizing Committee Chairman who also chairs the Jury meeting. The jury performs a secret ballot indicating the best paper, each voting Jury member may allocate up to 15 points to any single paper (see voting form enclosed). The jury has a right to change the number of prizes and the amount of money allocated to them. The results of the Competition are announced during the Conference dinner.

Papers qualified for the second stage of selection may be published in an extended volume in Conference proceedings, while winning papers may be recommended for publication in the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Publication of recommended papers is performed with the usual reviewing process. Authors are obliged to place an acknowledgment to the Competition.

The report on this event and the list of laureates will be published in PTMTS and ERCOFTAC bulletins.
